There's No Such Thing as a Pumpkin Pie Hater

There are so many different kinds of pies in the world; apple, blueberry, raspberry, cherry, key lime, and most importantly pumpkin. Just imagine a big slice of your grandma’s homemade pumpkin pie with so much whipped cream the pie has almost disappeared sitting right in front of you after a huge feast. That’s the way I eat mine. That’s the only way to eat it. I don’t understand people who just put one itty bitty little baby dot of whipped cream right in the middle of their piece of pie. What’s the point? How far is that going to get you? Nowhere. You got to go big or go home on Thanksgiving.

If you claim to hate pumpkin pie, you’re lying.  Not liking pumpkin pie is like not liking cider mill donuts…everyone likes them. Most people who eat cider mill donuts feel guilty afterwards because they are so fattening, but pumpkin pie is guilt free because it’s technically a vegetable and a fruit! Plus, by this time during the feast, you have already probably eaten your weight in turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing, so it’s a little too late for guilt. There is no question that pumpkin pie is the best thing to eat at Thanksgiving.

Reuse Reduce Recycle

For my essay this week I chose to write about recycling and the importance of it. I love everything about the Earth; the nature, the flowers, and the sky especially, and I would like to keep it clean for as long as possible. Littering is one of my biggest pet peeves so I thought this would be a perfect topic for me to look into just to learn a little more about the benefits. I know, as I’m sure you do as well, that recycling is a great thing. We should be recycling resources, not garbage.

Many people say that they don’t have time to recycle or that it’s a waste of time, which are two of the biggest excuses I have ever heard. I hope to learn and share more of the cons of recycling (if there are any). Recycling is easy and helps the environment, how much more could you ask for? It’s not hard to help Mother Nature out when you can.

College vs. High School

In my compare contrast essay this week I wrote about the few similarities and many differences between high school and college. We've all made the transition; we all know what its like. In my paper I wrote about the similarities first, like how there is still a teacher who lectures in front of the class, and you take notes and have to raise your hand to answer questions, but then I got into all of the differences. College is way different than high school in many ways. For example, the campus is bigger, the classes are longer, but you don't have them everyday, the professors, your attendance and homework, tests, and the way teachers grade. You've all experienced it by now; you know how it goes. Its a big change and you need to be prepared and responsible enough to get through it.

TED Talk: How I Built a Windmill

In the Ted Talk “How I Built a Windmill” nineteen-year-old William Kamkwamba was interviewed on stage. He talked about how he had this idea when he was only fourteen. He wanted to build a windmill to power his family’s home in Malawian Village. He then went on and talked about his process of going to the library, and finding and reading a book about energy, and seeing how to build one just by looking at a rough sketch. Then, he went home and built an electricity-producing windmill that lit four light bulbs and two radios throughout his home. He made it from spare parts and scraps from around the village, following his rough plans he has found.

Because he had such a thick African accent it was kind of hard to understand him, but I can’t believe that he built a windmill on his own just from looking at a book and using spare parts around his village. That’s amazing to me. No way would any nineteen year old in America would do something like that. We take for granted how spoiled we actually are. Although he was very vague and didn't get to go into detail and explain the process of how he put all the parts together, I still thought the story was amazing.
